Nizan Shikad

Nizan Shaked discusses her next project, Art Against the System, which examines the practices of artists and collectives that surgically intervene into state structure to offer expandable models, or affect visible political change. Using aesthetic analysis and manipulating form, they develop strategies that can be applied on a social scale.

Nizan Shaked is author of Museums and Wealth: The Politics of Contemporary Art Collections (Bloomsbury, 2022) and The Synthetic Proposition: Conceptualism and the Political Referent in Contemporary Art (Manchester University Press, 2017). She is a professor of contemporary art history, museum and curatorial studies, at California State University Long Beach.

2 unpublished drafts include a brief introduction to the entire project, but without the artist/chapters, and an early draft of “From the Synthetic to the Hyperbolic Proposition: Distinguishing Subjectivity from Identity,” which theorizes feminist conceptualism as the historical context for systemic intervention art.
